Vintage Japanese Wooden Daruma Sign

This is a charming vintage wooden Japanese Daruma sign, possibly used as a shop advertisement.

The sign is painted on both sides, each side a little different from the other. See photos.

Sign measures 15x18 inches

There are areas of missing or worn paint due to age, use, exposure to the weather.

There is a large "crack" running the length of the sign. This is most likely a space where boards came together but have separated slightly over time. There are 2 original staples in place, 1 in the back, 1 on the front, to keep the board together. Please look at all photos to see exactly what you are purchasing. There is a hole at the top w/a twine hanger.

Who is Daruma? Daruma is a Japanese figure that symbolizes resilience, perseverance, and good luck. There is a saying associated with Daruma: "Fall down seven times, stand up eight."

Purchased by me in a Kyoto antique store when I lived in Japan.
