The woman, played by Kim Novak, appears to be the reincarnation of a woman from the past, leading to a suspenseful exploration of obsession, identity, and guilt. With its innovative use of cinematography, including the famous "Vertigo effect" (a zoom and dolly combination), and its haunting score by Bernard Herrmann, *Vertigo* is regarded as one of Hitchcock's masterpieces and one of the greatest films of all time.
