He was one of the most respected yet controversial figures in the political world. As campaign strategist for Jimmy Carter, he was instrumental in achieving Carter's stunning victory. However, a scandal of mismanagment at Calhoun First National Bank of Georgia while Mr. Lance was Chairman of the Board forced him to resign the Carter position. Although acquitted in 1980, Mr. Lance's subsequent return as Chairman of the same bank resulted in shady deals with BCCI from 1980-1990.His phrase of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" became famous worldwide when published in a 1977 article.
