This is a small box I found while browsing a brocante in Lille, France.

It's a small case modeled after a nesting doll (matryoshka) with a hand-painted bouquet in the style of Tole painting?
To be more precise, it's a small case modeled after a nesting doll with a hand-painted bouquet in the style of Russian traditional craft/Khokhloma painting!
Tole painting is a broad folk art decorative technique that developed in parallel in several regions of Europe. It is a method of applying hand-painted pictures to metal products (tin/tole) and finishing them with rust-resistant varnish.

On the other hand,
The biggest feature of "Khokhloma painting" seems to be the method of applying a special lacquer after coating with tin powder and baking it at high temperatures, which changes the originally silver tin powder to a golden color.
The patterns drawn seem to have symbolic meanings, and the patterns on this item are flowers and leaves, representing growth, vitality, and prosperity.
Fruits and, rarely, birds are also depicted, strongly reflecting the craftsman's reverence for nature.

By the way, "Khokhloma" seems to be the name of a village in the Nizhny Novgorod region of northwestern Russia. It is an area associated with Maxim Gorky.

The existing craft techniques unique to Russia seem to have inherited the techniques of religious art cultivated before the Russian Revolution of 1917, having survived the political upheaval.

♥︎By the way, what is "Matryoshka"?
Matryoshka is a Russian female name. Originally, women in ethnic costumes were colored.
Awarded a bronze medal at the 1900 Paris World Exposition. (Japanese exhibits also won many awards.)
There are various theories about its origin, and the theory of its origin in Japan is strong. One is the existence of triple nesting Buddhist relic containers made in the Asuka period made of gold, silver, and copper, and another is the theory that the Seven Lucky Gods of Hakone marquetry were brought back to Russia by Russians.
In any case, it is an interesting subject as an example of the exchange and propagation of ideas and techniques.
The world's largest matryoshka is the "Matryoshka Hotel," which opened in 2017. It is located in Manzhouli, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Since there is a theory that the origin and concept of the nesting structure dates back to China around 1000 AD, it is a convincing point of convergence. It is said that the structure of the Buddhist relic containers that store the relics of Shakyamuni can be seen in various Asian countries. It seems to be due to Buddhism.
Now,
Are the guests the smallest matryoshka?
Interesting.
