Delicate, ecological and functional Vietnamese Kabazaiku, cherry bark craftwork originating in the early 17th century (1603-1868). Kabazaiku is truly a form of art, carved from the bark of the cherry blossom tree. A great deal of skill and artistry is required in creating small vessels to hold medicines, smoking accessories, seeds, herbs and tea. The bark is harvested in late summer/early fall after the rainy season from 70-80 year old trees. Applied to a liner, the cherry bark does not allow air to pass through to the container’s contents, keeping it moisture free. The bark’s beautiful horizontal grain and color variation offers a visual delight. Tea caddies or canisters are a common Kabazaiku handcrafted item.
