Rush light, candle clamp or Betty lamp rushlight.

Before wax candles were common, people burned:

dried rushes dipped in fat

thin tallow tapers

Those skinny, oily “lights” had to be clamped, so this tool held them upright while they burned.

The little weighted piece on the arm is the counterweight—keeps consistent pressure on the clamp as the rush burned down.

1800s-1920, likely handmade.

Great gothic decor.
This listing is for the rushlight only.
