Born in upstate New York, she began capturing scenes with a box camera at age eight and later studied music at Vassar and medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. After years practicing as an internist and anesthesiologist, Baldeck devoted herself in the 1990s to black-and-white silver gelatin photography, producing evocative portraiture, still lifes, and landscapes. Her work is noted for being unmanipulated—never cropped—and capturing the emotional essence of her subjects through slow, intentional technique.
